Kostenski waterfall

Kostenski (Kostenetski) waterfall is a waterfall in the Rila Mountains.

It is located along the Stara Reka River, about 3 km south of the village of Kostenets and 35 km from Borovets. The waterfall has a height of 12 meters. It is most flooded in the spring. The waterfall is extremely attractive in winter, when it freezes at low temperatures.

Since 2015. this landmark of the Kosten region is illuminated with colorful spotlights, which makes evening walks by the waterfall especially pleasant and full of beauty and harmony. In the immediate vicinity of the waterfall there are hot mineral springs, natural caves and rock formations.

In the vicinity around it and along the river Chavcha can be found a number of protected plant species.

In 1917 Ivan Vazov spent summer in Kostenets and was inspired by the surrounding nature to write the collection of poems "July Wrist", together with his later cycle of poems "Dissonances", published again in 1921 under the title "What the Mountain Sings". Two of the poems are dedicated to the Kostenski waterfall: "Above the waterfall" and "The waterfall cries".

In 1974 the waterfall was declared a natural landmark.
