The Episcopal Basilica is a worthwhile Sandanski stop if you enjoy reading a building’s plan, not just photographing a mosaic. Think of it as a religious complex with spaces for gathering, movement and worship. Following the relationship between the courtyard and church gives the ruins a clearer purpose than looking at each wall in isolation.

A published excavation report records work in the atrium, or inner courtyard, and beside the baptistery. Those findings help explain the complex, but an archaeological report is not a list of areas currently open to visitors. Ask staff which sections can be seen and how conservation affects the route.
