Visit at a glance
- Time & planning
- Plan from a named starting point and an agreed return route. Our editorial suggestion is to reserve a half-day mountain outing rather than squeeze Kom between two museums; this is a planning allowance, not a measured walking time. Your starting hut, pace and weather determine how much more time is needed.
- Access & seasonal notes
- Mountain access depends on conditions, route and restrictions—not opening hours. Confirm your starting point and hut arrangements; spring avalanche hazards are noted on the northern slopes.

Keep Berkovitsa's museums for a separate town stop or a poor-weather alternative. Do not add another summit merely because it looks close on a map. Check each museum's opening hours after settling the mountain plan.

Read the full visitor guidance and sources →Kom is a 2,016-metre summit in the western Balkan Mountains above Berkovitsa. Its appeal is the contrast between the mountain ridge and the lowlands visible towards Berkovitsa, Montana and Ogosta Reservoir in clear weather. The municipality's description also identifies it as the start of the Kom–Emine long-distance route. Visiting the summit is not the same undertaking as beginning that traverse.

Spring is not automatically summer hiking. The municipality notes avalanche conditions on the northern slopes in spring. Snow, ice or poor visibility require a different decision from a dry-weather walk. Check the forecast and local conditions before leaving, and arrange hut accommodation directly if your plan depends on it.
The Mountain Rescue Service's preparation advice is a useful checklist: suitable equipment, route knowledge, a charged phone and someone informed of your return. Set a turnaround time; a view is not worth losing the daylight needed to descend. This summary is not navigation guidance or confirmation that a route is currently open.
