Church of St. Peter and Paul

About 15 km northeast of the town of Etropole is the small village of Lopyan. One of its landmarks is the church of St. Peter and Paul, built between 1858 and 1864.

According to the memories of the locals, its consecration Ilarion Makariopolski was present in person - one of the leaders of the church-national struggle of the Bulgarians during the Revival.

The church is located in the middle of the village, on a small hill, close to the school and the town hall. Architecturally, it is a single-nave basilica and is partially dug into the ground, as the churches were built during the Ottoman rule. On the right side above the front door are engraved the names of the builders. Below the church is a catacomb.

The area around the church is one of the few necropolises where the deceased villagers have been buried over the centuries. It is the bones that were discovered during the excavations for the temple that were reburied in this catacomb.
