Cave "Sharenka"

Cave “Sharenka” is a small cave-museum, situated about 2.5 km away from the town of Madan. It is named after town largest district – Sharenka.

Sharenka is located 830 meters above sea level . The entrance diameter 1.5 m in marble rock and then 4-5 m slope leads to an underground corridor - gallery. The gallery leads to a small room that has an irregular shape with an approximate area of 100m. and an average height of 5 meters . The small hall leaving two narrower corridor. One - horizontal, which becomes impassable after 10 meters a second - shorter and steeper , which descends into the Great Hall .

Archaeologists have found that the cave was operated mining , has been inhabited since the Bronze Age ( 16-12 BC ).

The cave museum presents three sets - "human habitation ", " ore " and " Melting ore " with 10 pieces in natural human growth tools, as well as 24 vessels . It has been shown that it is used not only as a habitat , and also as a pit . A slit from the ceiling of the Great Hall comes to the surface of the rock terrain.

This natural chimney has played an important role not only in occupation of the cave , but to make it to the mining and smelting of iron ore during the period of Late Antiquity . Unfortunately today the ancient foundries were destroyed by treasure hunters.

Near the entrance there are wooden gazebo with a fountain , and the canyon nearby to hear the falling water of the waterfalls.

The cave was improved in 2008 as a joint project between municipalities of Madan and Keramoti (Greece). It is accessible by road, and for hikers by a trek long about 1 km. The cave has been turned into a museum with 10 wax figures in natural size, a fireplace, tools and household objects.
