Read the full visitor guidance and sources →Understand a capital through its hill. Tsarevets combines the remains of the medieval royal centre with restored structures and a commanding position above the Yantra. It is worth visiting for the relationship between defence, government and religious authority, not just for a photograph of the walls.
Choose a route with a return in mind. Start by orienting yourself at the entrance and deciding whether your priority is the palace area, the upper church or the broader settlement remains. These are not furnished medieval interiors. In the restored Patriarchal church, the large compositions by Teofan Sokerov are modern art, not surviving medieval frescoes.
