The Natural Science Museum

The founder of the natural history museum is Vasil Georgiev /1875-1963/, who was a teacher. For over 60 years he studied and collected various types of fossils, mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles, insects and more. Thanks to him today in the Museum everyone can see part of the natural diversity of the eastern part of Stara Planina. In 1981, on the occasion of the celebration of 1,300 since the founding of Bulgaria, was open the new building where the Museum is located today.

All exhibits are separated by species: insects, plants, amphibians, fishes, Invertebrate fossils, reptiles, mammals and birds. They are presented in their natural environment. The expositions includes also rare and endangered species like Black Vulture, Black Stork, Otter and others. The exhibits are placed at an area of 1000 square meters, that makes the Natural history museum of Kotel second biggest on the Balkan peninsula, after the one in Bucharest.
