St George the Conqueror Chapel Mausoleum

Pleven's St George Chapel-Mausoleum is a memorial to soldiers from the Russian and Romanian armies who died in the 1877 fighting. The museum account describes the chapel art and the ossuary beneath it. The visit is worthwhile for seeing how architecture, religious images and remembrance share a space, not for treating the building as another battle simulation.

Look at how the memorial speaks. Our suggested focus is one element of the iconostasis or painted interior and the way it differs from a historical caption. Notice the distinction between a work of memorial art and evidence of the fighting itself. Ask which spaces are open that day; a description of the crypt does not guarantee unrestricted access to it.
