Skravena memorial ossuary

Skravena's memorial ossuary is a place of remembrance for members of Hristo Botev's rebel detachment, rather than a large museum to tour. It preserves the remains of ten men associated with Georgi Apostolov's group. The local tourism account explains how villagers buried the remains and how they were eventually transferred to the memorial, opened in 1982. The sculpture “Mother's Grief” gives the visit a focus on mourning and the community's role in preserving memory.

What to expect. This is a memorial containing human remains. Give children an age-appropriate explanation before entering and let companions decide whether they want to go inside. Keep the visit quiet; ask the attendant about photography rather than treating the interior as a backdrop for a group photo.

Access starts with the community centre. The memorial is in the village centre, about five kilometres north of Botevgrad towards Mezdra. The local tourism page says the key and tourist stamp are held at the chitalishte; the municipal listing names it as “19-ti fevruari 1906”. Call +359 7137 20 44 before travelling to arrange entry, especially for a group. Confirm any admission charge and whether the entrance meets your access needs. Winter weekends need a separate check. The tourism timetable lists weekday sessions of 09:00–12:00 and 14:00–18:00 in both seasons, with 10:00–18:00 weekend opening specified for March–November. It does not give winter weekend hours, while the municipal listing gives general weekend and holiday hours. Do not infer guaranteed winter opening from that difference. June commemorations can also change the usual visiting arrangements; ask for the programme for your date.

Nearby combination. Pair the memorial with the Historical Museum in Botevgrad, whose permanent displays put the region's history in a broader chronology. It is a separate stop in town, not a continuous walking route from Skravena. Check the museum's own seasonal hours and allow travel between the two.
