Lake Pomorie

Pomorie Lake is a saline coastal lagoon where salt production and bird habitat share the landscape. The Green Balkans nature overview explains its place on the Via Pontica migration route. Visit for observation of a living wetland, not a guaranteed checklist of species. The birds you see depend on the season, weather and what is happening in the habitat that day.

Start with a viewing point, not a chase. The museum's visitor-centre overview describes an exhibition and terrace observation with optical equipment. Ask what is currently available. Our suggestion is to watch one bird's behaviour from a permitted viewing position before trying to identify many species. Bring binoculars if you have them; do not approach nesting islands or enter working salt pans to improve a photograph.

Time to allow. Our editorial estimate is 60–90 minutes for the centre and a focused nearby observation stop, excluding travel. This is not a full circuit of the lake or a measured route along the spit. Ask staff which approaches are currently suitable for your group. Plan for wind and exposed weather, and shorten the outdoor portion if conditions make standing and watching uncomfortable.

Centre hours are not lake-access hours. The municipality's 2026 museum schedule and the operator's hours page give the seasonal sessions below. October has different days from summer. Confirm holidays and final admission through the centre contact; a closed centre does not establish permission to use every shore path, embankment or salt-production area.

Check access without disturbing wildlife. Ask about the terrace, any steps and an appropriate observation location before arriving with mobility needs. We have not checked a step-free lake circuit. Stay on designated visitor approaches, follow current signs and keep distance from birds. This is a nature-viewing plan, not advice for bathing, collecting mud or entering the water.

Add the Salt Museum for the human side. The visitor centre is beside the Salt Museum on the lake's southern side. Our suggested pairing is wildlife interpretation followed by salt-production history, not a walk through operational salt pans. Check the second museum's admission and hours separately: being next door does not make its ticket or lunch arrangements identical. Allow yourself to skip it if observation or centre entry takes longer than planned.
