Time & planning
Allow 4–5 hours as an editorial estimate for an Aleko–summit return outing with breaks in suitable snow-free conditions, excluding transport from Sofia. Pace, route choice and weather can require longer. Use the Mountain Rescue Service's preparation advice; wind, fog and ice can change the decision. Winter travel needs appropriate experience and equipment, not a summer time allowance.
Access & seasonal notes
Outdoor mountain: no visitor opening timetable. Plan for daylight and current weather/trail restrictions. Checked 7 October 2026: lift operator lists Simeonovo not operating and Vitoshko Lale 1/2 in maintenance. Verify transport separately; summit facilities not guaranteed.
Where to go
Cherni Vrah summit, Vitosha Nature Park, above Sofia; Aleko is a separate trailhead area.
Nearby options & next steps

Carry your own food and water rather than depending on a summit café or open shelter. Keep an Aleko-area stop as the shorter alternative if higher ground is unsuitable, and set a turnaround time before starting. Follow designated routes and restrictions; this summary is not a turn-by-turn navigation guide or a promise of clear summit views.

Cherni Vrah is a mountain day above Sofia, not simply a city viewpoint reached by a lift. Vitosha's highest summit combines open high-ground scenery with a place in Bulgarian walking culture: the Tourism Union account connects it with Aleko Konstantinov's organised ascent in 1895. Enjoy that context without making reaching the summit more important than returning safely.

For a first plan, use Aleko as a starting area and consult the park's route descriptions alongside a current map. Older lift references are not operating guarantees. On 7 October 2026, the lift operator lists Simeonovo as not operating and Vitoshko Lale 1 and 2 in maintenance. Confirm road or bus access and the return journey independently.
