Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral rewards a visit that goes beyond photographing Sofia's familiar skyline. Walk around the square to see how the domes overlap, then give the interior time: the change in scale, painted surfaces and quiet activity make this a different experience from the exterior view. Remember that the building remains a place of worship.

The cathedral's visitor page lists daily opening from 07:00 to 19:00 and Sunday liturgy at 09:30. Services are not sightseeing performances. Keep conversation low, leave worshippers space and ask about current photography rules rather than assuming that admission allows every type of filming.

Allow 30–45 minutes as an editorial estimate for the cathedral, excluding a service. The Museum of Christian Art in the crypt is a separate National Gallery visit, with icons and other religious art. Its Tuesday–Sunday hours are 10:00–18:00, with ticket sales ending at 17:30; it closes Mondays and public holidays.

If the crypt interests you, reserve another 45–60 minutes and check its admission conditions independently. Otherwise keep the cathedral as a short central-Sofia stop rather than treating the museum as compulsory. Dress respectfully, ask staff about any access needs and allow extra time around major religious holidays, when ordinary tourist movement may be affected.
